题目:We live in cities or towns which have museums
displaying historical and cultural importance, but people do not
visit them. What are the reasons? How important are
those museums to our society?

In some countries around the world men and women are
having babies late in life. What are the reasons? Is it a positive
or negative development?

Nowadays, people always throw old things away and buy
new things, whereas in the past, old things were repaired and used
again. What factors cause this phenomenon? What effects does the
phenomenon lead to?

the fashion等等。

IELTS-Blog

Your best IELTS study partner

Happy New Year 2013!
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/7HWhzXnFomg/
Dec 31st 2012, 10:30

Hello everyone! This is Simone Braverman, the author of IELTS-Blog.com. If you've spent some time studying with this blog and my books – you probably know me. If we haven't met before, I'd like to welcome you to the biggest IELTS community world-wide.
For 364 days a year you come across my IELTS preparation materials first, but today is a kind of special day, so I'd like to put work aside and say a few words.
Dear IELTS test takers, teachers, language school managers, IELTS examiners, colleagues, family and friends! It's amazing how a whole year zoomed by. Today, as we're just about to step into 2013, can you look back and say – was 2012 everything you wanted it to be? How many things did you cross off your "2012 to-do list"? What are you looking forward to in 2013?
My 2012 … was too hectic to describe, but I'll try anyway.
The number of this website's visitors broke all records… again! In 2012 IELTS-Blog.com received almost 3.5 million visits, and close to 11.8 million pages got downloaded! No wonder we had to upgrade our servers (we hate making people wait for a webpage to load!), and our customer support team grew as well, so we can answer all emails as quickly as possible. I know you're studying under time pressure – and so we have to respond FAST. Also, thanks to everyone who likes us on Facebook – all the 12,000+ fans, and to 30,000+ people subscribed to our daily tips.
My happiest moments in 2012 were receiving all those wonderful emails from people who prepared with IELTS-Blog, and got their target score.
My biggest disappointment this year was not being able to release a new IELTS book, that Stephen Slater and I wrote, as we planned in 2012. This unique book is based on 6 years of research and many more years of experience, and it turned out we underestimated the amount of effort needed to put it all together. But this was only a temporary setback! If you're taking the IELTS test in 2013, you will be able to take advantage of "IELTS Success Formula", as we're releasing it very soon!
All in all, 2012 was a great year. I hope 2013 will be kind to us all. Here is to a peaceful and successful year that will see you reach new heights.
Happy New Year 2013 from Simone Braverman and the whole IELTS-Blog team!

题目:More and more companies are allowing employees to work
from home. Do you think this is a positive or negative
development?

With the increasing use of mobile phones and computers,
fewer people are writing letters. Some people think that the
traditional skill of writing letters will disappear completely. To
what extent do you agree or disagree? How do you think
letter-writing is important?

In the past, people used to travel abroad to see many
differences from their home country. Nowadays, cities throughout
the world are becoming more and more similar. What are the
reasons? Is this a positive or negative
development?

IELTS Letter, topic: Leaving your current employment
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/tebyvOvFPSg/
Dec 21st 2012, 10:30

You have decided to leave your current employment. Write a letter to your employer. Include the following in your letter:
- Explain why you are writing

- Explain why you have decided to leave the company

- Tell your employer what you plan to do after leaving your present employment
Dear Human Resource,
I am writing this letter in regards of terminating my contract with the organization as a Guest Service Agent. The employment contract has stated a requirement of two weeks' notice. Therefore, my last day of employment will be on 25th of May 2012.
The decision made was due to personal reasons, as my family and I will be migrating to Singapore. Recently my husband has been offered a managerial position in a five star hotel, which we thought would be a better prospect for his career.
Once my family and I have settled down in Singapore, I plan to look for a "work at home" job. This allows me to have flexibility with my time and would be able to take care of my children too. Leaving the company is a great loss for me as I have learnt a lot and was given opportunities to grow.
Finally, I would like to thank you for the guidance provided during the period of my employment.
Yours sincerely,
Eve
This letter covers the requirements of the task, all the bullet points are addressed sufficiently. The information and ideas are presented logically, and the paragraphing is appropriate. Although there are some instances of poor word choice and grammar, most of the sentences are error-free. Overall, seems worthy of Band 8.

Can you get IELTS Band 7.5 after only 10 days of study?
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/d0A76-OGoo4/
Dec 18th 2012, 10:30

It's no secret that these days everyone is leading a very busy life, which affects the amount of time we can dedicate to our goals. Even to very important goals, such as passing the IELTS exam with a high score. This is why many people end up with just 10 days left for IELTS preparation. Only 10 days … can it possibly be enough?
Some time ago we published a case study about a Malaysian student who managed to prepare in 10 days and get Band 7.5. Since history tends to repeat itself, today you will learn about another student, and how he managed to get ready in just 10 days and achieve Band 7.5 in IELTS.
Meet Ram Kumar – a 20-something young man from India, who speaks Telugu. Here is what he wrote about his IELTS experience:
"I am very happy to let you know that I have secured a band score of 7.5 in IELTS. This is my FIRST attempt and I had only 10 days to prepare and the credit really goes to …

Target Band 7. The book is really superb. I would suggest it to everyone."
When Ram Kumar won our monthly results competition, and we asked him to share his best tips for success with other test takers, here's what he said:
"I am very much grateful to the team of IELTS-Blog for their constant input and updates. Finally, I am extremely grateful to Simone for introducing me to one of the finest books, "Target Band 7″. Frankly speaking, I had 10 days to prepare for the exam and I just went through the book and grasped those strategies.
I come from a university where the medium of instruction and communication is strictly English. This has helped the cause very much. But when it comes to an exam things are quite difficult. There are a few things I would like to suggest the freshers who are taking IELTS exam:
1. Familiarize yourself with the pattern of the exam. It is the most important thing I have done.
2. When you are practicing, take it section by section. Have practice tests and have as many as possible so by the end of those sessions you should see improvement.
3. For the speaking part, while you are practicing, I think its better to have an mp3 player, for recording your voice. That gives a clear picture of where you stand. You can improve the modulations and pronunciation.
4. For the Writing part – I think it will be very good to familiarize yourself with the style and pattern of writing. It would be nice to have at least 2 practice tests.
5. Finally, it doesn't matter how many days you have on hand, it's only a matter of your commitment. So I think 10 days is a good deal of time. If I can do it, anyone can pull it off.
ALL THE BEST GUYS "

How did this young Indian student get Band 8.5 in IELTS?
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/blAXS4DJ7x8/
Dec 11th 2012, 10:30

Today we are happy to share the IELTS tips we received from Maany R, who won in our monthly results competition. Maany is a 20 year-old Indian girl whose first language is Tamil. However, her English is almost as good as her mother tongue – and she proved it by receiving IELTS Band 8.5 Overall score with a remarkable Band 9 in Listening.
She was quite happy to see her result, and wrote to us:
"I just ended up getting a overall band of 8.5 in academic module. Thanks for all the tips on your blog, it was of great use to me. I really didn't expect a 9 in listening and it was all because of the practice tests I took on the blog. If there is anything I could add on to the blog about my experience I would be delighted to help."
And , of course, we asked for her best IELTS tips straight away Here they are:
"Listening: I found it very competitive but if you listen carefully there is a great possibility to score a 9. Since I got a 9, the only tip I could offer is stick to the conversation fully and avoid using erasers while the test is in progress.
Reading: Most of my friends who took the exam with me found reading very tough. Somehow I managed a 8.5 Looking for synonyms and not for the exact words mentioned in the question would be advisable. To avoid running short of time in the end always transfer answers to the answer sheet directly after every passage. Try answering the paragraph summary questions as you read it will save a lot of time.
Writing: Don't write long passages. I wasted a lot of time finishing my writing early which is why I got only 7.5. Try to spend more time on the longer essay. After finishing if you have time try replacing some of the everyday words with fancy synonyms that might impress your examiner.
Speaking: My speaking went totally haywire but I still managed to get an 8. I believe I could have done a lot better if I hadn't written down notes in the question card by mistake. Also try avoiding non-lexical fillers like 'urgh' and 'hmm' because they create a bad impression. Make sure you include some quote or idiom in your 2 minute speech. It would sound impressive in your introduction or conclusion."

Five sentences for reporting information in IELTS Academic Writing Task 1
If, like many IELTS candidates, you find it difficult to report information from a graph, chart or table, then you may find the following IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 sentences useful to remember. (If you're not familiar with IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, you can see an example in our post 'The chart shows… (2)').

 1. A useful sentence for reporting an increase or decrease in a number (in the past)

The number of _____ increased/decreased from  _____ in ____ to  _____ in ____ (e.g. The number of men taking full-time courses increased from just under 100 000 in 1970/71 to around 200 000 in 1990/91)

2. A useful sentence for reporting the highest or lowest percentage (in the past)

The percentage of _____ was at its highest/lowest in ____ with __ (e.g. The percentage of commuters who travelled by bus was at its highest in 1980 with over 25%)

3. A useful sentence for reporting increases or decreases in two percentages (in the past)

From ____ to ____, the percentage of _____ and _____ increased/decreased from __ to __ and __ to __  respectively (e.g. From 1960 to 2000, the percentage of commuters who cycled and walked to/from work decreased from around 27% to 7% and 35% to 10% respectively)

4. A useful sentence for comparing information (in the past or present)

There are/were _____ more _____ than _____  (e.g. There are nearly 245,000 more women aged 65 and over in the country than men)

5. A useful sentence for reported a percentage in relation to the total (in the past, present or future)

_____ accounted for / accounts for / will account for __  of _____  (e.g. People aged 60 and over will account for over 43 percent of Japan's population by 2040)

All of the example sentences above are from the IELTS writing samples on our blog and the slideshow I recommended in my post 'IELTS reading practice for the weekend'.

IELTS Letter, topic: An explanation for a relative
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/7qBx5tBqZNo/
Dec 8th 2012, 10:30

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won't be home until the evening. Write a letter to your relative. In your letter:

- explain the arrangements you have made for them to get keys and enter the house

- tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house

- say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Dear Tanya,
How are you? I hope your journey was comfortable. I have an appointment with my dentist at 4 pm today, this is why I will not be at home when you will reach. However, I have left the keys with Mr Sharma at house #14. You can take the keys from him and enter the house. I have made some Chicken Biriyani for you and arranged the guest room upstairs so that you can take rest.
When you arrive, your train will stop at the Central railway station. You need to take the exit towards Roma Street. Once you come out of the station, you need to turn right and walk 100 metres. You will find the bus stop number 58 on the opposite side of the road. You need to catch bus number 333 and get down at Robertson Stop. My address is: #27,Fleetwood St, Macgregor.

I will be home by 5:30 pm, and so will be Sam and Harry as well. We have planned to watch "The Dark Knight" at home. I will make smoked salmon with chicken salad and we can have some wine with the dinner as well. See you soon.
Lovingly Yours
Tanay
This letter covers the requirements of the task, all the bullet points are addressed sufficiently. The information and ideas are presented logically, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The use of vocabulary can be improved. Most of the sentences are error-free with only a few inappropriate words used. Overall, seems good enough for Band 8.

IELTS Letter, topic: Telling a friend about a new job

Hey, you're new here! I love new people, welcome.

You may want to subscribe to IELTS-Blog and get all the updates via email or via RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Write a letter to an English-speaking friend. In your letter
- explain why you changed jobs
- describe your new job
- tell him/her your other news

Dear John,

I am writing to let you know that I finally got a Software Engineer position in Google. I am so happy to share this news with you. As I told you earlier, my previous job was so bored to me. I kept working on fixing uncountable bugs of an existing system. Thus I started seeking new job opportunities 2 months ago.

Since I walked in Google’s office during my first interview, I immediately knew that this was my ideal work place. My major responsibility is tuning search results on several Google’s products. The most exciting thing is that my supervisor is a pioneer in this area around the world. I believe that I can get enormous cutting-edge knowledge from him.

Furthermore, I have bought a new house near my office. I sincerely invite you to come to visit next month if you are free at that point of time.

With best wishes,

Michael

This letter covers the task prompt fully. It has the right structure and its level of formality is suitable for a personal letter. The vocabulary and sentence structure is fine. The letter could have achieved a higher band score if it wasn’t for the errors (mouse over the words in blue will show suggested corrections). Seems worthy of Band 8.

IELTS report, topic: Table describing different types of families living in poverty

Hey, you're new here! I love new people, welcome.

You may want to subscribe to IELTS-Blog and get all the updates via email or via RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The table below shows the proportion of different categories of families living in poverty in Australia in 1999.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

The table shows a breakdown of different types of families who were living in poverty in Australia in 1999.

It is noticeable that 11% of people were living in poverty. However, this figure was considerably high among the sole parents and single people who did not have children and those percentages were 21% and 19% respectively. Moreover, this proportion was significantly prominent among the couples who had children compared with the family structures consisted with couples who did not have children. In fact, the proportion of couples with children living in poverty was 5% more than that in the family types consisted only with couples. In contrast, this trend favoured aged people. However, this figure was slightly more (2%) among the single aged people than that in the family category of aged couples.

In conclusion, it is clear that the proportion of people living in poverty varied according to their family structures.

This report covers the requirements of the task. The main trends / features were mentioned, but could have been developed more fully. The candidate has arranged ideas coherently. The range of vocabulary is sufficient, even though it lacks flexibility to some extent. There are a few grammatical mistakes in the report. Overall, the task response meets the expectations and seems good enough to achieve Band 7.

IELTS Essay, topic: Natural resources cannot sustain economic growth, agree or disagree?

Hey, you're new here! I love new people, welcome.

You may want to subscribe to IELTS-Blog and get all the updates via email or via RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

There is no longer enough natural resources to sustain current levels of economic growth. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Recently, the demands of natural resources have risen dramatically across the world due to population growth. Some people state that we have not enough resources. However, there are some individuals who disagree with this opinion. In this essay, the issues behind this phenomenon will be examined.

On the one hand, some people state that if the number of natural resource will continue to degrease we cannot have a comfortable life because natural resources are limited. According to a government research in the USA shows that if this situation will continue, the petrol will lose in 2050. Moreover, it is widely said that the number of population in the world will increase. This will make the amount of natural resource decrease.

On the other hand, there are some individuals who disagree with above-mentioned perception. The demands of natural resources will be lessen owning to improving the technology. For example, the developments of technology such as electronic cars gave a positive impact in the society. By using this, we can decline the consumption of natural resources. Eventually, we will not need natural fuel. In my opinion, decreasing of natural resource is quite crisis, I think the loss of it give a negative impact in the society because even we won’t have a comfortable life any more.

In conclusion, I agree with the idea that there is no longer enough natural resources to sustain this situation. In order to defense our life, the governments every countries should tackle this issue.

This essay needs work, in particular in the areas of grammar, sentence structure and word choice (mouse over the words in blue will show suggested corrections). The arguments could have been more convincing. The word count is only 245, whereas at least 250 words are required to avoid being penalised. Overall, this looks like a Band 5.5 essay.
