IELTS essay, topic: Change is always a good thing, agree or disagree?
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/lZ5G3H9vIng/

Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding changes. Others, however think that change is always a good thing. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.
Nowadays, people are arguing whether an ideal lifestyle should be a stable one or in wide ranges of changes.

In my opinion, whether changes are needed - should be determined - the stages of lives you are in.
Apparently, alternations in lives are favourable to the development of young people, in regards to their careers. Primarily, abundant experience in varieties of jobs enables the young to master a broad range of techniques and skills, leading to - significant edge over the counterparts in the competition of employment. Meanwhile, trying various roles of lives and jobs provides - wide selections of lifestyles for the young in the future. Only after this comparison can they realize what the real goals of their lives should be striven for.
However, other than frequent changes, the elderly who have undergone all these challenges may pursue a steady lifestyle. For the elders, concentration on their favourite activities would give rise to a sense of enjoyment and security, which is helpful to physical and psychological health. Due to a stable life, the elderly are less exposed to stress, leading to a decrease in adrenal hormones and resulting in their well-beings.
Furthermore, degeneration of mental and physical function would make the elderly unlikely to adapt to external changes, causing frustrations and depressions, which are not favourable to their health.
Above all, it is unlikely to describe the changes in life with a positive or negative term. Accommodation of personal needs and goals are more important than the changes themselves.

Diyora's IELTS tips for Band 7.5
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/0FW7UycP-dU/
Jan 31st 2013, 10:30

Diyora is a young lady from Uzbekistan, whose first language is Uzbek – however it seems that her English is pretty darn awesome as well! With her IELTS score of 7.5 she won in our monthly results competition and wanted to share these tips with you:
"It's a great pleasure and an honor for me to be selected as one of the monthly competition winners! While I was preparing for the exam, I visited your website every single day with the only desire to grab a little bit of those amazingly useful tips from successful test takers! And now I'm really excited about the fact that someone actually will be able to read my story and maybe get something important from it!
Well, the first thing that I have to point out is that you don't have to let that terrible fear of failure and nervousness overwhelm you! Yes, I know you've already heard these annoying words for a thousand times now, but still I'm going to tell you that for the 1001st time: "Please, don't worry too much!"
It is good to have a some butterflies in your stomach, because a little anxiety keeps you alert and stimulates your brain. But you have to realize that IELTS is not a competition in any way, everyone is responsible for their own results. Unfortunately, this is something that I understood only when I passed the exam and lost some points because of being extremely frightened and nervous, with my hands and knees shaking! Undoubtedly, there's absolutely nothing to be afraid of, the examiners are not monsters, and all of them are very courteous and supportive.
Talking about the exam itself, everything is organized on a high level, so that you don't have to worry about any formalities.
I have to confess that it is essential to practice as much as possible if you are aiming to get a high score. The more tests you do, the better you will get familiarized with the exam structure and expand your vocabulary, which is one of the most influential factors of IELTS.
For Writing, it's good to get your essays assessed at least several times and understand your mistakes, in order not to repeat them the next time. Personally I don't usually read the topic for Task 2 before I finish Task 1. Sometimes people start panicking when they read what they have to write about and think about it while they're writing Task 1. As a result, none of the tasks end up being written well. Just read the instructions two or three times carefully and brainstorm. I'm sure you'll find the required amount of words for the given subject. In addition to that, don't even try to change anything dramatically when there is little time left, better check and double check your work and find some silly mistakes before the examiner does.
For Reading, TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN is definitely my "favorite" part. And guess what, I had to deal with it in all the three passages! It's useful to practice Reading without using dictionary in the process of looking for the answers. But when the passages are complete and checked, try to underline all the unfamiliar words and learn as many of them as you can. After doing that for a couple of times I found out that there were considerably fewer words that I didn't know in other Reading tests.
For Listening, which is the part that I like the most, just try to stay focused. Read the questions when the time is given, but when the CD is on, pay your full attention to the speakers. I read the multiple choice questions a couple of times, as usual, during my exam. But then, don't even know why, I suddenly started to think that I hadn't memorized the questions, and started to read them again. Finally, I didn't hear some of the answers and had nothing to do except for guessing. Don't repeat my mistake!
And for Speaking, all those strategies like eye-contact, smile and confidence in your eyes play a significant role and help you create a positive picture in the examiner's mind. Be yourself, don't think that your answers will be wrong, because your unique features and your own opinion is what they are looking for. There are hundreds of test takers and you have to differ from them, show your personality if you want to get a high score. Recording yourself on an MP3 player is very useful (this is something that helped me a lot) as you don't usually pay attention to your mistakes while you speak, but when you listen to the recordings, you usually notice them.
It's also good to try to complete Listening, Reading and Writing at once several times before the exam in order to get to know how much concentration you need for these parts.
I know that I haven't discovered America with my advice, but I hope I've done something worthy! Finally, I wanted to tell you that IELTS is a key that opens a lot of important doors for your successful future. But, you don't have to sacrifice your health by working day and night, eating tons of chocolate and gulping down liters of coffee, trying to increase your stamina and the amount of endorphins! All that devotion doesn't not necessarily mean that you'll get a higher score! You'll just find yourself completely frustrated at the end! Honestly, just take it easy and be grateful for any result that you get.

IELTS Report, topic: Table describing the satisfaction of sports club's members
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/zCQnLiLcBR0/
Jan 29th 2013, 10:30

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The table below shows the results of a survey to find out what members of a city sports club think about the club's activities, facilities, and opening hours.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make any comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.

The table illustrates the preference levels of male and female members of a sport club about their activities, facilities and opening hours. It is clear that the greater proportion of male members is contented about the club's activities (91%) whereas this figure is true only for 70% of female members.
Moreover, more than 85% of both male and female are happy about the facilities and 63% of male members and 64% female members are extremely satisfied in this regard. In fact, only 14% of female members and 10% of male members are negative about this.
In addition, opening hours are in the best interest of women as 97% of them are positive about it. In contrast, more than one third of men have expressed their dissatisfaction in this regard.
In conclusion, it is clear that male and female members hold different opinion about the activities and facilities and opening hours of the club.
A reasonable outline of main trends, differences or states was given. The key features were presented and emphasized, but some aspects were left out of the description. There is a logical organisation of information; it is evident that the writer progresses from one idea to another. The use of linking words and phrases is suitable. The range of vocabulary is wide enough for the writer to show some flexibility and accuracy of expression, but still some words are repeated over and over again. There are incidental errors in word choice, spelling and word formation, however error-free sentences are common. Overall this report seems worthy of Band 7.

IELTS essay, topic: The advantages and disadvantages of studying in another country
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/zTp8YIfS0xo/
Jan 28th 2013, 04:37

Every year an increasing number of students choose to go to another country for their higher education. Do you think the benefits of this development outweigh the problems associated with it?
The past twenty years have seen a dramatic change of the number of students who go abroad to begin college in China. In this essay, I will explore the advantages and disadvantages of this trend.
On the one hand, both students and their country can benefit from this trend. First, students can choose more suitable education methods for themselves because there are more options. The course and teaching methods are quite different from China. According to foreign experts, the higher education in China is really not good as that of those developing countries, especially in contrast with Europian or US. Secondly, people can improve their foreign language, but, they can contact with others when they are in a foreign country, and they will quickly master the foreign language. Thirdly, it helps to promote the mutual understanding between their mother land and their destination countries. These students exchange information with the locals. Students can get better understanding of the destination countries. People in their home country will get more vivid information about other countries through these messages. Similarly, the locals also can get more clear recognition about other countries.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages too. Firstly, it costs people a lot of money to begin college in foreign countries. Many families have to take out all their savings to support their children to go abroad. Secondly, some students cannot stand the big difference of the new environment, they maybe quit their study and come back home.
To conclude, given the undisputable fact that to begin college in foreign countries helps students with their studies and promotes the mutual understanding between countries, even if there are some drawbacks, I think the benefits outweigh the problems.
All the parts of the task were covered, although some were covered better than others. The writer's position is relevant to task prompt, although the conclusions are somewhat repetitive. The information is presented coherently, it is evident that the writer progresses from one idea to another. The linking words and phrases are used, however at times they seem repetitive or forced (not natural). There are some attempts to use more sophisticated words, not all are accurate. Even though there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, they don't make the meaning much harder to understand. Overall, this essay seems worthy of Band 6.

Student success: how Senthil prepared for IELTS and got Band 8

If you've been following IELTS-Blog.com for some time, you may remember Senthil Sarangapani from India, a winner of our December 2012 competition with an overall IELTS Band Score of 8. Senthil is a 32 year-old Indian test taker working in a financial services company. He took the General Training IELTS test in December last year, and here is what he said on the day his results were out:
"Hi Simone,
I scored band 8 in IELTS (GT) and much of the credit for my score goes to you and your book Ace The IELTS.
Your writing style is inspiring. I felt as if the best coach in town was sitting next to me and guiding me personally while reading your book. The strategies you have given for tackling each component of the test and the practical tips really came in handy while taking the test.
When I started my preparation I worried about the writing exercise, but at the end you really made me believe that even 'a monkey could do it.' Your assuring words boosted my morale and prepared me to face the test with confidence.

Thanks heaps!"
Today we would like to share the exam tips Senthil asked to pass on to everyone:
"The very first step in the IELTS preparation is to familiarize yourself with the question patterns in each module. My suggestion to all is to read the book 'Ace the IELTS' by Simone Braverman. It covers every type of questions that you might expect in IELTS along with the strategies to handle them and the traps to watch out for.
Take as many practice tests as you can in all the modules. Practice is the only way to score higher bands. If you are using practice materials from internet or CD, print them out and practise using the paper prints. While practising, adhere to the time limits of each module. Practise the listening, reading and writing modules consecutively without break to build your mental stamina. Download the blank sample IELTS answer sheet online, print it off and use it to write your answers while practising.
In the Listening and Reading modules, look for the instruction that tells you the number of words you should be using to answer the questions. As this number varies for each section within a module, check out the instruction at the beginning of each section before attempting to answer the questions.
Attention is the key to success in the Listening module. Keenly follow the speaker in the recording. If you have missed a word or a phrase related to the question you are attempting, do not startle or attempt to guess while the recording is being played. Move on to the next question and leave the guesswork till after the end of the recording.
In the Writing module, the length of your answer is as important as its structure. Too short will lower your score and too long will eat away at your precious time. Write down four to five lines of text in the sample answer sheet. Count the number of words you have written in each line. Assuming it is averaging nine words per line, you have to write approximately 28 lines to compose an essay of at least 250 words long. Set the length of each paragraph of your essay in such a way that when the lines of each paragraph are added up, it should come approximately to 28 lines. For instance, write an introductory paragraph of length about four lines long, then write three paragraphs, each of about seven lines long discussing the topic and then windup with a concluding paragraph of about three lines long. Thus, if you set the paragraphs length according to your handwriting, you would automatically control the length of your essay. You can follow the same approach while writing the letter as well.
Finally, if you have some time left at the end of each module, review your answers."

http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_4ae7ca990102e1wx.html
Jan 21st 2013, 14:51

Questions 11
Question 12
George
Question 13

Question 11
考生在这个地方会听到was too slow making up his mind to buy
难点:was slow making up his mind代表犹豫,所以可以确定答案是was unsure。
Question 12
线索1:考生可以听到转折but,然后说 his personal life wasn't as successful.
2: He was no longer on speaking terms with his brother 还有 by
the death ……of his elder daughter.
problems。
Question 13
另外:考生可以用排除法做这道题,因为没有听到与rich source of materials for his
books相关的句子,也没听到escape from his work的内容,所以可以确定答案是C。

Question 14 Pear Alley
Question 15 Mulberry Garden
Question 16 Shop
Question 17 Tea Room
left,所以应该是J,然后是kitchen garden on your right,地点I。
Question 14
Question 15
Question 16
跟踪路标:考生一定要注意一个地方,录音中提到shop时,说它between the house and
Question 17
考生听到了路标词Tea Room,后面就说on the far side of the garage。

In what time period can data from the float projects help with
the following things?
At present, in the near future,还有in the long-term future.

同义替换: is being = at present

做27题的时候,考生可以听到climate change,之后提到了 results are still a long way
同义替换: a long way off = in the long-term future

right now,所以可以确定答案是A。
同义替换: right now = at present

同义替换: quite soon= in the near future

在做30题的时候,考生可以听到Crop collection的同义词组,然后听到的时间词组是 a long way in the
同义替换: a long way in the future = in the long-term
run.

IELTS Report, topic: Bar graph describing trends in consumption of fast food
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/NjlkdjLMRGg/
Jan 17th 2013, 10:30

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The chart below shows the amount of money per week spent on fast foods in Britain. The graph shows trends in consumption of fast foods. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.

The bar chart illustrates the expenditure on three different types of fast food such as hamburgers, fish and chips and pizza in people in different level of income.
From the chart, it is clear that in a high-income group, 40 pence is spent on hamburgers a week, which is the largest among the expenditures on all the three types of fast food. This expenditure is also the greatest one in the average income group, but the amount of money spent is only about 33 pence a week, much less than that in the high-income group. As for the low-income group, the largest expenditure is on fish and chips, about 18 pence a week.
The line graph compares the trends of the amount of three type of fast food consumed between 1970 and 1990. It is clear that the amount of hamburgers and fish and chips consumed showed an increasing trend, while pizza consumed gradually decreased from 300g in 1970 to 700g in 1985, before it grew to about 240g in 1990. The consumption of fish and chips overtook that of pizza and hamburgers in 1982 and 1988 respectively.
This report covers the requirements of the task. The main trends and features were presented but should be developed better. The candidate has arranged ideas coherently, though the data is reported in a repetitive way. The range of vocabulary is adequate. There are a few errors in grammar and word choice, and one instance of inaccurate data (mouse over the underlined words shows corrections). Overall, this task response meets the expectations and seems good enough to achieve Band 7.

IELTS listening practice: numbers
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/IeltsPreparationBlog/~3/j0u0H7uwDiY/
Jan 15th 2013, 03:59

Do you find it difficult hearing numbers correctly in the IELTS Listening test?
In the IELTS Listening test, there are always some questions were the answer is a number and so it would be a good idea to practice listening to numbers as part of your IELTS preparation.
For some online listening practice to numbers, check out the following links to some dictation exercises on the EnglishClub website. In each example, you should play the recording, write down exactly what you hear and then click on 'Show' to check if you're right.

Numbers and letters
Quantities
Currencies

If you get any answers wrong, play the recording again until you can hear the correct numbers more clearly.
The recordings are not specifically for IELTS, but I've done a few of the exercises myself and think they will give you some useful practice of listening to numbers and writing them correctly. If you write down every word you hear for each exercise, you'll also be able to check your spelling when you reveal the answers.
Get listening!

IELTS Letter, topic: Get well wishes for a team-mate
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/cWpk3rSPxIk/
Jan 11th 2013, 10:30

You play sport (e.g. football) for a local team. You recently heard that a player in your team is in a hospital. Write a letter to your team-mate. In your letter:
- Say how you feel about the news

- Ask about the treatment in the hospital

- Suggest some ways of cheering him/her up
Dear John,
I'm sorry to hear that you've fallen and fractured your leg. It is extremely unfortunate that you had this accident, especially when we are having a big match next week.
I understand that you're admitted in St. John's Hospital and will be there for a week. I hope you're taken care well at the hospital. Although there had been some complaints about St. John's in the past, I heard they have improved a lot. Did you get to consult their chief orthopaedician? His speciality is in sports medicine and he could probably suggest some specific treatments that will help you.

And let me share some good news with you. Our university has granted a sports scholarship for your studies. I heard it from our coach and you should be getting a letter shortly. So it is not all gloom!
Do let me know if you need any help. I will visit you at the hospital next week. Till then, bye.
Regards,
Prasad
This letter covers the requirements of the task, all the bullet points are addressed sufficiently. The information and ideas are presented logically, and the paragraphing is appropriate. Although there are some instances of poor word choice and grammar, most of the sentences are error-free. It is best to avoid using contractions (e.g. you're, we're) in IELTS letters. Overall, seems worthy of Band 8.

http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_4ae7ca990102e1r8.html
Jan 10th 2013, 16:26

paper
Test paper 2

Section

Student success: how Sainattee passed the IELTS test with flying colours
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/VesguwMFE3A/
Jan 10th 2013, 10:30

What you're about to read is a very inspiring story. It began in October 2012, when Kevin and Sainattee H, a family living in Thailand, needed to prepare for the IELTS test to move to Australia.
Kevin spoke English all his life, but his wife Sainattee, who is Thai, never had formal training in English after finishing high school. She learned English all by herself while working in the hospitality industry in Thailand, and it was fine for everyday use – but taking a formal English test was quite a scary prospect.
Looking for IELTS materials to help him coach Sainattee, Kevin came across IELTS-Blog.com and subscribed to our free daily tips. A couple of weeks later he decided to put his trust into our book

Ace the IELTS – and never regretted this step, because… this book helped him prepare his wife and just one month later she passed IELTS "in one go, with flying colours" – those are his own words!
Here is what Kevin says about their IELTS journey:
"I wanted to write to you to thank you for all the great work and effort you are doing by providing all these tools, tips and recommendations available for people who have to prepare for their IELTS test.
For myself the target score was never in doubt but for my wife who is Thai this was a very daunting target to achieve. But thanks to all your collateral, recommendations and book we bought she was able to pass the test in one go.
Although her English is very good for a daily conversation use, practising it in test situations is a completely different thing. She learned English all by herself after she left high school by working in translation offices and hotel receptions, as English was at that time only taught on a very basis level in Thai public schools. When I met her many years ago her English was already quite good and she was not shy to use it in daily conversations. But then to raise the level of her English knowledge up to the next level to be able to use it in a real test situation I was not sure if she could handle the stress of the IELTS test.
But thanks to your book, test samples and other collateral and my guidance she nailed it in one go. My wife has also learned a lot about English language grammar and structure thanks to your book and we have asked our daughter to use it as a guide to improve her English writing skills.
So there you go, a big thank you from 2 happy campers and I will recommend your collateral, books, sample tests and recommendations to anybody I know.
There is a lot of IELTS clutter out there, but your site captures all the relevant and required tools to pass the test so I think this should be known to those who have to take the test."

IELTS Report, topic: Line graph describing the consumption of fish and meat
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/so8igxlktoY/
Jan 8th 2013, 10:30

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The graph below shows the consumption of fish and different kinds of meat in a European country between 1979 and 2004.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.

The graph illustrates the quantities of fish and different kinds of meats consumed in a European country between the time period of 1979 and 2004. Over this span of 25 years, the consumption of beef, lamb and fish have all decreased while the consumption of chicken has dramatically risen.
The biggest consumption in 1979 was beef (about 220 grams per person was consumed every week) while the lowest consumption in 1979 was fish (around 60 gram per week was consumed by a person). The amount of fish which was eaten has remained almost constant at about 50 grams from 1979 and 2004. The trends of beef and lamb consumption were similar, with decreases in amount in between the years. While beef consumption had declined from over 200 grams per person per week to around 100 grams during 25 years, lamb's was starting 150 grams to approximately 50 grams at the same period.
In contrast, chicken consumption had grown up gradually to year of 194, reaching a peak at 250grams per person every week in between 1994 and 2004.
This report covers the requirements of the task. The main trends and features were sufficiently developed. The candidate has arranged ideas coherently, though at times they report data in a repetitive way. The range of vocabulary is adequate. There are a few errors in grammar and word choice (mouse over the underlined words shows suggestions for improvement). Overall, this task response meets the expectations and seems good enough to achieve Band 7.

IELTS report, topic: Double line graph describing the birth rate in China and the USA
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Ielts-blog/~3/atwMP6AnvKc/
Jan 3rd 2013, 12:27

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The graph below compares the changes in the birth rates of China and the USA between 1920 and 2000.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.

The graph demonstrated some striking similarities between the Chinese and the US birth rates from 1920 to 2000. Both countries experienced considerable fluctuations in the similar period with some lows during the 1940s and some highs during the 1930s.
The birth rates in China rose from 10% in 1920 to 15% in 1935. Later, the figure plunged to a low of 5% in the 1940s and was followed by an exponential growth to the peak of 20% in 1950. Next, the fertility rate dropped sharply to 8% in the following five years. Finally, the figure declined gradually to 3% during the latter half of the century.
Meanwhile, the US had similar birth rate of 12% to that of China in 1920. The figure fluctuated in between 12% and 14% during 1920s and 1930s until it hit a low of 4% in 1945. Five years later, the birth rate reached a peak at 15% in 1950 but it made a steady fall to the final figure of around 7% in 2000.
This report covers the requirements of the task. The main trends / features were sufficiently developed. The candidate has arranged ideas coherently, though the use of linking words can be improved. The range of vocabulary is adequate. There are a few errors in grammar and word choice, and one instance of inaccurate data. Overall, the task response meets the expectations and seems good enough to achieve Band 7.
